Why Siaya Stadium is the Perfect New Home for Gor Mahia

Gor Mahia, one of Kenya’s most iconic football clubs, has announced plans to use the newly opened Siaya Stadium for their Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) home matches.

This development comes after the team played a friendly match at the state-of-the-art facility last Thursday against Ugandan side Kitara FC. The stadium’s outstanding features and fan turnout during the game have sparked excitement among Gor Mahia fans and the larger football community.

Siaya Stadium, officially inaugurated last week by Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni, is already making waves in Kenyan sports.

The modern facility boasts a seating capacity of 20,000, with plans to expand to a massive 60,000 in the near future. The upgrade will include additional features like netball and volleyball courts and a tartan track for athletics.

The renovations, which resumed in 2022 after initial delays, have transformed the stadium into a symbol of progress for Siaya County and Kenyan football. President Ruto emphasized during the opening ceremony that the government remains committed to completing the stadium to international standards, including adding a canopy and other essential features.

Gor Mahia’s Secretary General, Sam Ocholla, highlighted the stadium’s top-tier facilities after their thrilling 9-8 penalty victory against Kitara FC.

“The stadium is in excellent shape, and we were impressed by its facilities. The pitch and terraces meet the required standards,” Ocholla said. “The VIP area is particularly well done, and we have decided that some of our matches will be played there.”

Ocholla also praised the impressive fan turnout during the friendly match, noting that the vibrant atmosphere created by local supporters reinforced the club’s decision to embrace Siaya Stadium as a potential home ground.

Pending Approval from FKF

Before officially listing Siaya Stadium as one of their home venues, Gor Mahia awaits approval from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) committee. This process ensures that the stadium meets all requirements for hosting league matches.

Currently, Gor Mahia uses the Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Stadium in Homabay and Machakos Stadium for their home games. The unavailability of Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo Stadium—both under renovation ahead of the Africa Nations Championship (CHAN)—has forced the club to explore alternative venues.

The decision to use Siaya Stadium is a win not only for Gor Mahia but also for the local community. The influx of fans during match days is expected to boost the local economy, creating opportunities for businesses and vendors around the stadium.

With plans to expand the stadium’s capacity to 60,000, Siaya County is poised to become a hub for regional and international sports events. The inclusion of netball, volleyball, and athletics facilities further enhances the stadium’s versatility and appeal.

Gor Mahia fans have expressed their enthusiasm about the move to Siaya Stadium. The modern facility offers an upgraded match-day experience, complete with comfortable seating, better viewing angles, and improved amenities. For many fans, the stadium represents a new era for the club, fostering a sense of pride and anticipation.

Social media buzz surrounding Gor Mahia’s friendly match at Siaya Stadium showcased the passion of the local football community. Pictures and videos of the game circulated widely, with fans praising the stadium’s quality and vibrant atmosphere.

President Ruto’s Commitment to Sports Development

During the stadium’s opening ceremony, President Ruto reiterated his government’s dedication to supporting sports infrastructure in Kenya.

“The remaining works, including installing a canopy, will be completed by the national government,” Ruto said.

His remarks underline the importance of modern sports facilities in nurturing talent, hosting international events, and uniting communities. With Siaya Stadium now operational, it stands as a testament to the government’s commitment to advancing Kenyan sports.

As Gor Mahia prepares to host league matches at Siaya Stadium, the move symbolizes progress for Kenyan football. The stadium’s world-class facilities are expected to attract more fans, elevate match-day experiences, and inspire future generations of footballers.

For Gor Mahia, playing at a top-tier venue like Siaya Stadium could also improve their performance on the pitch. A quality playing surface, coupled with passionate fan support, creates the perfect environment for success.

While approval from FKF is still pending, the club’s leadership remains optimistic. With such a promising facility, Siaya Stadium could become a permanent fixture in Gor Mahia’s journey toward maintaining their status as one of Kenya’s top football clubs.

Siaya Stadium is more than just a venue; it’s a beacon of hope and progress for Kenyan sports. Gor Mahia’s move to embrace this modern facility reflects the club’s ambition and commitment to providing fans with the best possible match-day experience.

As the stadium continues to evolve, its impact on local sports and the economy will only grow. For now, Gor Mahia fans can look forward to witnessing their beloved team make history at Siaya Stadium—a place where dreams take shape, and legends are born.
