Honoring a legend: Super Cup Basketball Challenge 2024 raises awareness for cancer

The Sterling Super Cup Basketball Challenge 2024 Seniors is just around the corner, and this year, the event is set to be more meaningful than ever.

From October 11 to 13, 2024, basketball fans will gather at the Nyayo Stadium Gymnasium in Nairobi, not just to witness high-stakes basketball competition, but to honor the life and legacy of Job Waka, a pivotal figure in Kenyan basketball who passed away earlier this year.

This tournament is dedicated to raising awareness and support for cancer patients, with Waka’s enduring impact serving as the inspiration behind the event.

Waka’s contribution to basketball in Kenya went far beyond his roles as a player, coach, and referee. As the CEO of Sterling Sports Inc and MichezoTV, Waka’s mission was to transform the landscape of youth basketball, creating pathways for aspiring athletes and advocating for community-driven initiatives.

The Super Cup Basketball Challenge 2024 is not just another sports event—it’s a tribute to Job Waka’s vision and an opportunity to give back.

With 16 teams—eight men’s and eight women’s squads—competing, the tournament represents the highest level of basketball talent in the region.

However, this year’s event goes beyond competition; it’s a symbol of solidarity, a platform to raise awareness about cancer, and a space where the community can come together to honor Waka’s enduring legacy.

Waka passed away on September 3, 2024, after a two-year battle with colorectal cancer, but his impact lives on. His career as a FIBA-certified agent, his role as a coach and referee, and his advocacy for youth sports development shaped the future of basketball in Kenya.

For Waka, basketball was more than just a game—it was a means of empowering young people, promoting teamwork, and fostering community spirit.

The Sterling Super Cup 2024 will serve as a powerful reminder of his contributions, particularly his commitment to blending sport with advocacy.

Brian Mboya, Chief Operations Officer of Sterling Sports Inc, emphasized how this tournament is a way of continuing Waka’s mission. “Job’s passion for basketball and his work with cancer awareness was inspiring. This tournament allows us to continue his mission and give back to the community,” said Mboya.

With the Super Cup 2024 set to feature 16 teams—split evenly between men’s and women’s divisions—the level of competition is expected to be fierce.

Last year’s champions, the Ulinzi Snipers (men) and Noga (women), will return to defend their titles, while UON Vikings and Equity Hawks, who finished as runners-up, will be looking to challenge for victory this time around.

The tournament’s connection to cancer awareness is an important aspect of the event. Funds raised from ticket sales and sponsorship will go towards supporting cancer research and helping patients in need.

Waka himself was a key figure in merging basketball with advocacy, often spearheading cancer awareness programs linked to sporting events.

As a result, this year’s tournament carries on that tradition, ensuring that the cause remains at the forefront of the event’s purpose.

In the spirit of inclusivity and community engagement, ticket prices have been kept affordable to encourage a wide audience to attend.

Tickets are priced at Sh100 for students, Sh300 for regular entry, and Sh1,000 for VIP seating, making it possible for fans from all walks of life to participate in the event.

Tickets can be purchased through Sterling Sports Inc’s website and across their social media platforms, ensuring accessibility for everyone.

Super Cup Basketball Challenge isn’t just about watching basketball. It’s about bringing people together—fans, players, and stakeholders alike—in a shared mission to raise cancer awareness and support those affected by the disease.

Andy Mboya, COO of Sterling Sports, expressed the importance of the community’s involvement: “This tournament is more than just competition. It’s a way for us to celebrate Job’s life and work, and to contribute to a cause that affects so many people. We urge everyone to come out and be a part of something bigger.

The connection between sports and advocacy is a growing trend, and the Sterling Super Cup Basketball Challenge 2024 is a perfect example of how a community-driven event can be used to raise awareness for an important cause.

Cancer affects millions of people worldwide, and sports offer a platform to bring visibility to the issue, while also inspiring action and support.

By uniting basketball with cancer awareness initiatives, the tournament is shining a light on the importance of early detection, treatment options, and supporting those affected by the disease.

This year’s event will not only offer thrilling basketball but also provide educational resources on cancer prevention and care. Fans attending the event will have access to information on how they can contribute to the fight against cancer.
