Tusker FC’s title challenge suffered a setback as they failed to capitalize on their chances against Gor Mahia, settling for a goalless draw in a thrilling Football Kenya Federation Premier League (FKFPL) match at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos. The result allowed Police FC to extend their lead at the top to two points after their 2-0 victory over Bidco United on Saturday.
With the title race heating up, Police FC now sit at the top of the FKFPL standings with 41 points, two ahead of Tusker FC, who remain in second place with 39 points. Gor Mahia, the record champions of Kenya, are third with 35 points but have a game in hand, keeping their title aspirations alive.
The Brewers, who needed a win to match Police FC on points, have now dropped six crucial points in their last three matches. A streak of three consecutive draws against KCB, Police FC, and now Gor Mahia has hampered their quest for dominance.

This was the second match under the leadership of Gor Mahia’s newly appointed Croatian coach, Sinisa Mihic. His home debut came after an impressive 2-1 victory against Mathare United at Dandora Stadium in his first game in charge.
While a goalless draw against Tusker may not have been the perfect homecoming, the display showed promising signs of a more disciplined and structured Gor Mahia under Mihic.
Missed Opportunities Cost Tusker Three Points
The game started with high intensity, with Tusker FC showing early attacking intent. Within the first two minutes, they were awarded a free kick in a dangerous position, but Chrispine Erambo’s header was well-saved by Gor Mahia’s goalkeeper, Kevin Omondi.
Another golden opportunity came just two minutes later when Dennis Wanjala delivered a well-placed cross to Erick Balecho, whose shot, unfortunately, went off-target.
Gor Mahia had their first significant chance in the 17th minute when Paul Ochouga whipped in a quick cross from the right wing, but Tusker’s keeper Brian Opondo reacted swiftly to deny them a breakthrough.
The first half saw both teams creating decent chances, with Alpha Onyango’s header from a free kick in the 29th minute failing to trouble Tusker’s defense. Just before halftime, Sharrif Musa also came close, but neither side could find the cutting edge to break the deadlock.
Second-Half Adjustments but No Breakthrough
At the start of the second half, Tusker coach Charles Okere made tactical substitutions, bringing on Denis Iguma and Dennis Oguta for Fabian Adikiny and James Kibande in an effort to add fresh legs to the midfield.
Gor Mahia responded with their own changes, introducing Ronney Onyango and Gedeon Bendeka to replace Paul Ochouga and Charles Bbaale.
Despite these changes, the second half lacked the urgency of the first, with both sides struggling to convert their chances. The defensive organizations of both teams remained solid, ensuring a frustrating evening for their attacking players.
Both teams must now regroup quickly as they prepare for crucial midweek fixtures. Gor Mahia will be traveling to face Bidco United on Wednesday, February 19, while Tusker FC will aim to bounce back when they host Shabana on Thursday.
Police FC, now in pole position, will be looking to widen the gap at the top when they face Nzoia Sugar in their next fixture. With 12 games remaining in the season, every point counts, and any slip-ups could prove costly in the tightly contested title race.
Can Tusker Reignite Their Title Chase?
Tusker’s inability to break down defensive setups in recent matches raises concerns about their attacking efficiency. While they have remained unbeaten in six consecutive games, three draws in a row mean they have allowed their title rivals to gain momentum.
To keep their hopes alive, Charles Okere must find solutions to Tusker’s recent struggles in the final third. A clinical approach in front of goal could be the difference between a title-winning season and another year of falling short.
For Gor Mahia, Mihic’s tactical discipline is evident, and their game in hand provides an opportunity to close the gap. If they capitalize on that advantage, they could significantly disrupt the title race.
