Emmanuel Okwi, Uganda’s all-time leading goal scorer, has officially retired from international football after an illustrious 16-year career with the Uganda Cranes. The 32-year-old forward, who made his national team debut in 2009 as a teenager, announced his retirement on Tuesday through his social media channels. Okwi leaves behind a legacy of dedication, leadership, and goal-scoring excellence, having captained the Cranes and played a pivotal role in their success on the continental stage.
A Storied Career with the Uganda Cranes
Okwi’s journey with the national team began in March 2009 when he earned his first cap at just 17 years old. Over the years, he became one of Uganda’s most influential players, amassing 95 caps and scoring 28 goals. His goal tally makes him Uganda’s all-time top scorer, with 22 of those goals coming in competitive matches.
Throughout his career, Okwi was known for his ability to deliver in crucial moments. He played a vital role in Uganda’s AFCON 2019 campaign, helping the team reach the knockout stages of the tournament in Egypt. During that campaign, he found the net twice, scoring against DR Congo and Zimbabwe.
The Decision to Step Away
In his retirement statement, Okwi expressed his deep gratitude for the opportunity to represent Uganda on the international stage. He described playing for the national team as a dream come true and an honor that he will cherish forever.
“Representing my country on the international stage has been a fulfilling dream that came true. Donning the Uganda Cranes shirt always felt special, and captaining the team was an absolute honor,” Okwi wrote.
He further emphasized the importance of making way for younger players, acknowledging the exciting new generation of Ugandan footballers emerging ahead of major tournaments.
“An exciting new era of Ugandan football is coming with East Africa hosting the CHAN later this August and subsequently the 2027 AFCON, with many young footballers coming up. That is why, having cherished all the memories, I believe it is time for me to bow out and pave the way for our talented young footballers,” he added.

A Leader On and Off the Pitch
Okwi’s leadership extended beyond scoring goals. In 2021, he was handed the captain’s armband after legendary Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango retired from international football. As captain, he played a crucial role in guiding Cranes through a transition period and providing mentorship to younger players.

His final game for the Cranes came in 2023 during the AFCON qualifiers, where Uganda suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat against Algeria. Though the team missed out on qualification for the 2024 AFCON in Ivory Coast, Okwi remained a respected figure in Ugandan football.
Club Career and Achievements
While his contributions to the national team are well-documented, Okwi also enjoyed a successful club career across multiple countries. The forward played for clubs such as Simba SC in Tanzania, SC Villa in Uganda, and Yanga SC. Currently, he is part of Rwandese side Kiyovu Sports, where he continues to showcase his talent.
His ability to adapt to different leagues and maintain consistent goal-scoring form made him one of East Africa’s most recognizable footballers. His success in Tanzania’s Premier League, particularly with Simba SC, saw him win multiple league titles and establish himself as one of the best foreign players to grace Tanzanian football.
Uganda’s Future Without Okwi
With Okwi’s retirement, the Cranes will now look toward younger forwards to step up and fill the void left by their legendary striker. The team is in a transitional phase, with promising talents emerging in both domestic and international leagues.
As Ug Cranes prepares for upcoming tournaments like the CHAN 2024 and the 2027 AFCON, there will be opportunities for new stars to make their mark. However, Okwi’s contributions will not be forgotten, as he remains one of Uganda’s greatest-ever footballers.
A Lasting Legacy
Emmanuel Okwi’s retirement marks the end of an era for Ugandan football. His impact on the national team, both as a player and as a leader, will be remembered for years to come. His dedication, hard work, and passion for the game set an example for the next generation of Ugandan footballers.
Though he has stepped away from international football, Okwi’s influence on the sport will undoubtedly continue, whether through club football or future roles in Ugandan football development. His name will forever be etched in the history of the Cranes as one of the nation’s finest players.
