Julius Yego, the 2016 Olympic silver medalist in javelin, is laser-focused on securing a top-three finish at the Zurich Diamond League this Thursday. His goal is clear: to amass enough points to qualify for the season finale in Brussels, slated for September 13-14. The Diamond League javelin competition is structured around five key events—Doha, Paris, Lausanne, Zurich, and Brussels. Only the top six athletes from the first four meets earn the right to compete in the Brussels finale. Currently, Yego finds himself in 10th place with a total of four points, which he accumulated from an eighth-place finish in Doha and a sixth-place finish in Lausanne. These modest results have left him outside the top six, making his performance in Zurich all the more critical.
Despite the pressure, the 35-year-old Yego remains confident in his ability to secure a place in the final. “I want to ensure I get enough points in the final Diamond League stage in Zurich to enhance my chances of making the final in Brussels,” Yego stated in a recent interview. His optimism is fueled by a deep belief in his capabilities and a strong desire to compete against the best.
In the Diamond League, points are awarded based on an athlete’s finishing position in each event. The winner of a meet receives eight points, second place earns seven points, and third place gets six points. Currently, Grenada’s Anderson Peters leads the standings with 21 points, followed by Jakub Vadlejch of the Czech Republic with 16 points. Both Peters and Vadlejch have already secured their spots in the Brussels final. Olympic silver medalist Neeraj Chopra from India and Germany’s Julian Weber are tied for third place with 14 points each, making them strong contenders as well.
Other athletes still in the hunt for a spot in Brussels include Ukraine’s Arthur Felfner, who has nine points, Moldova’s Andrian Mardare with eight points, and Japan’s Roderick Genki Dean, who has six points. For Yego to break into this group, he will need to perform at his very best in Zurich.
“If I make the final in Brussels, then that will be my last competition of the season,” Yego mentioned, indicating that he is aiming to finish the season on a high note. For Yego, competing in the Diamond League final would be a fitting end to a year marked by both triumph and challenge.
This year, Yego has already achieved significant milestones. In June, he captured his fifth African Championships title in Douala, Cameroon, reinforcing his status as one of the continent’s top javelin throwers. These successes came after a strong showing at the Paris Olympic Games, where Yego finished fifth with a throw of 87.72m, showcasing his ability to compete at the highest levels.

However, Yego’s journey this season has not been without its challenges. He has had to overcome a series of setbacks, including an injury that disrupted his training and led to weight gain. “I struggled a lot after sustaining an injury and added some weight at some point since I could not run. I just focused on the gym work without the aerobics which is dangerous for an athlete,” Yego explained. These difficulties forced him to adjust his training regimen, focusing on rebuilding his strength and conditioning to return to peak performance.
Looking beyond the Diamond League, Yego has already set his sights on the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. He understands the importance of starting his preparations early, particularly after the challenges he faced this season. The qualification standard for the World Championships is set at 85.50m, with the qualification period running from August 1, 2024, to August 24, 2025. Yego is determined to meet this standard and ensure that he is in top form when the time comes.
