‘This Season We Will Do Very Good Things’: Guardiola Confident Despite City’s Slide

Pep Guardiola’s Path to Reviving Manchester City Amid a Stunning Crisis

Pep Guardiola and Manchester City are navigating uncharted territory as the club endures a stunning five-game losing streak across all competitions. Once untouchable, the reigning Premier League champions find themselves in a crisis marked by defensive lapses, misfiring attacks, and the weight of their own success. As Guardiola’s side prepares to face Feyenoord in a must-win Champions League clash, the manager remains defiant, doubling down on his philosophy and principles to reverse the tide.

A Chaotic Reality for a Formerly Untouchable Team

Manchester City, a team synonymous with control and dominance, now grapples with chaos on and off the pitch. Vice-captain Kevin De Bruyne described the current state as “chaotic,” citing the volume of injuries and players performing despite physical limitations. This unfamiliar instability has contributed to a string of poor results, including heavy losses like 4-1 and 4-0 scorelines that were once unthinkable under Guardiola’s reign.

The stats are stark: five straight defeats, leaving Guardiola the only Premier League manager without a single point in November. Tuesday’s Champions League match against Feyenoord presents City’s last chance to salvage a disastrous month.

Guardiola’s Philosophy: No Retreat, No Surrender

Amid the turmoil, Guardiola remains resolute in his approach. Asked whether he would consider altering City’s tactics, he was defiant:
“What should I change? If I should change in the first season, maybe we would not win six Premier Leagues in seven years. Impossible. I am not going to change.”

Instead, Guardiola plans to double down on the principles that have brought him unparalleled success. He emphasized returning to the fundamentals that made City a dominant force in English and European football.
“We have to go more direct to our principles. Don’t change much, less than ever,” he added.

Identifying the Root of the Problem

While Guardiola dismisses the idea that City’s struggles stem from a lack of effort or complacency, he acknowledges several contributing factors:

  • Injuries and Absences: Key players like Rodri and Kevin De Bruyne have been sidelined, disrupting the team’s balance and transition play.
  • Goal-Scoring Issues: Erling Haaland, City’s talismanic striker, has struggled to maintain his prolific form. Guardiola pointed out that after Haaland, defenders and midfielders like Josko Gvardiol, John Stones, and Mateo Kovacic have been the top scorers—a glaring indication of underperformance from the attacking unit.
  • Defensive Vulnerabilities: City’s recent defeats have highlighted their susceptibility to counterattacks, a weakness exacerbated by Rodri’s absence.

Guardiola remains philosophical, attributing some of City’s struggles to fine margins, including missed chances and standout performances from opposing goalkeepers like Tottenham’s Guglielmo Vicario.

The Pressure of Past Success

City’s current predicament is magnified by the weight of their achievements. Having won six Premier League titles in seven years, the club’s legacy sets an almost impossible standard to maintain. Guardiola admitted that such sustained excellence comes with inherent challenges:
“Tell me one team in the world that cannot drop a little bit after being beyond exceptional over many years.”

The manager’s unwavering loyalty to his players reflects his belief in their ability to overcome this slump. “I know these guys. I never blame one player. They are not stupid; they know exactly our reality,” he said.

The Champions League: A Turning Point?

Tuesday’s Champions League clash against Feyenoord offers City a crucial opportunity to reset. A victory could not only restore confidence but also position them to secure qualification for the knockout stages. Guardiola, however, remains cautious:
“Right now, every opponent is tough for us. It doesn’t matter which we are going to play.”

Despite their struggles, City still occupy second place in the Premier League and 10th in the Champions League standings. Guardiola’s pragmatic approach emphasizes taking it one game at a time. “Are we ready to win the Premier League? No. We have to win one game and after win the next one,” he said.

Erling Haaland: A Key to Recovery

Haaland’s form has been a topic of concern, with the Norwegian striker finding goals harder to come by. Guardiola, however, stressed Haaland’s importance to the team, saying:
“Without Erling, we would be in more trouble.”

While the manager expects more contributions from other players, Haaland’s return to his prolific best could be pivotal in reviving City’s fortunes.

The Road Ahead

City’s slump may be surprising, but Guardiola’s confidence in his team and methods remains unshaken. As he looks to change the dynamic and rebuild momentum, the manager is leaning on the lessons of past successes. His message is clear: patience, resilience, and a return to basics will guide City through this turbulent period.

The journey back to dominance won’t be easy, but Guardiola’s defiance and belief suggest that Manchester City’s story is far from over.
