Kenya’s national elite amateur golf team has once again proven its dominance on the African golf scene by winning the 2024 Africa Region IV Golf Championship in a spectacular fashion.
The prestigious three-day, 72-hole tournament took place at the stunning Kigali Golf Resort and Villas in Rwanda from October 3rd to October 6th.
With exceptional talent, strategic play, and an unwavering team spirit, Team Kenya secured their third consecutive title, solidifying their place as the region’s top golfing nation.

Team Kenya’s victory was not just another win; it was a demonstration of their growing prowess in the sport. With an impressive overall team score of 841 gross, Kenya comfortably outpaced regional rivals Uganda and Rwanda, who finished second and third, respectively.
This marks the third consecutive year that Kenya has lifted the trophy, following their wins in 2022 and 2023.
The four-man team—comprising Michael Karanga, Adel Balala, John Lejirma, and Elvis Muigua—showcased skill, resilience, and determination throughout the championship.
After opening the tournament with a solid round of 214, they built on their lead with consistent scores of 221, 203, and 203 in subsequent rounds.
Their ability to adapt to the challenging conditions of the Kigali course was evident in their gameplay, a factor that made all the difference.
The Stars of Team Kenya: Consistency and Brilliance
Leading the charge for Kenya was Michael Karanga, the reigning Kenya Amateur Golf Championship (KAGC) champion.
Karanga’s final round score of 66 was nothing short of spectacular, and it cemented his position as one of the tournament’s standout performers.
Over the three-day event, he posted impressive scores of 70, 76, 64, and 66, finishing first in the individual category with a total score of 276 (-12). His consistency and ability to navigate the tricky Kigali course set him apart from the competition and propelled Kenya to victory.
Team captain John Lejirma also played a pivotal role in the team’s success. Lejirma’s steady performance, marked by rounds of 72, 73, 68, and 70, earned him second place in the individual standings, where he tied with Uganda’s star golfer, Joseph Cwinyaai.
Both finished with an overall score of 283 (-5). Lejirma’s leadership and focus were instrumental in motivating his teammates and maintaining the momentum that led to their triumph.
“This victory is a testament to the hard work and dedication of our entire team. Winning this championship is an honour, and I believe our focus, ability to adapt to challenges, and strong team support set us apart,” Lejirma expressed during an interview with Golf Score Kenya.
Adel Balala and Elvis Muigua: The Supporting Pillars
Adel Balala, another key player for Kenya, delivered solid performances throughout the tournament. Despite a challenging second round where he shot an 82, Balala rebounded strongly with rounds of 72, 71, and 67.
His final round of 67 was among the best performances of the event, showcasing his resilience and mental toughness. Balala’s efforts earned him sixth place in the individual standings, tying with his teammate Elvis Muigua, who posted consistent scores of 75, 72, 72, and 73 for a total score of 292 (+4).
Muigua’s calm demeanor and calculated approach were crucial for the team, particularly in high-pressure moments. His ability to perform under pressure was a key factor in ensuring that Kenya maintained its lead over the competition. Both Balala and Muigua’s contributions underscored the depth of talent in Team Kenya, proving that their success is built on a strong, united front.

The Competition: Uganda and Rwanda Fall Short
Despite strong performances from Uganda and host nation Rwanda, neither team could match the consistency and skill displayed by Kenya. Uganda finished second with an overall team score of 875 gross, led by the impressive rounds of Joseph Cwinyaai, who shot 70, 74, 72, and a stunning final round of 67.
Cwinyaai’s performance helped Uganda close the gap slightly on the final day, but it was not enough to overcome Kenya’s commanding lead. Teammates Joseph Reagan Akena, Joseph Kasozi, and Ibrahim Ssemakula also contributed significantly, but Kenya’s advantage remained unchallenged.
Rwanda finished third with a team score of 899 gross. Led by Felix Dusabe, the Rwandan team put up a valiant effort but could not match the consistency of their Kenyan and Ugandan counterparts.
Dusabe was Rwanda’s standout performer, with rounds of 78, 75, 72, and 71, tying for ninth place in the individual standings with a total score of 296 (+8). Although Rwanda showed promise, Kenya’s superior strategy and teamwork kept them at bay throughout the tournament.
Other Contenders: Seychelles, Mauritius, and Ethiopia
Beyond the top three teams, Seychelles and Mauritius tied for fourth place with scores of 906 gross each, while Ethiopia finished in sixth place with a score of 994 gross.
These teams displayed potential, but they still have a long way to go to reach the consistency and level of play demonstrated by Kenya. The depth of competition in the Africa Region IV Championship highlights the growing interest and talent in African golf, but Kenya remains the team to beat.
The Road Ahead: All Africa Championship in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe
With another regional title under their belt, Team Kenya is now setting its sights on the upcoming All Africa Championship in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, scheduled for the end of October.
This continental event will be an opportunity for Kenya to showcase their talents on a larger stage and potentially claim another prestigious title. The team’s recent form suggests that they are well-prepared to take on the challenge.
