Kenya Police Coach Antony Kimani Urges Team to Be More Clinical After 1-1 Draw with Tusker FC

Kenya Police Football Club started their 2024/25 season with a frustrating 1-1 draw against Tusker FC in their first league match, held at the Police Sacco Stadium. The match saw Kenya Police take an early lead, only to surrender the advantage in the dying moments of the game. Coach Antony Kimani expressed his concerns over his team’s lack of killer instinct, which he believes led to the disappointing result.

Despite the setback, Kimani remained positive about the team’s overall performance, particularly in the first half, and looks forward to improving in future matches.

Early Lead Squandered

The game started on a promising note for Kenya Police as they quickly established dominance on the field. Marvin Nabwire gave the team an early advantage, scoring in the 19th minute. The goal was a testament to Kenya Police’s well-organized play in the first half, where they controlled possession and created several goal-scoring opportunities.

However, their inability to convert these chances into goals would soon come back to haunt them. Kimani’s side allowed Tusker FC to remain in the game, despite having the upper hand for most of the match. In the 89th minute, Tusker’s Lawrence Luvanda capitalized on a lapse in Kenya Police’s defense, scoring the equalizer that ultimately resulted in a shared point.

Kimani’s Call for a Killer Instinct

In his post-match interview, Coach Antony Kimani did not shy away from addressing the key issue that led to the draw — his team’s lack of a “killer instinct.” Kimani stressed that while creating chances is important, it is equally crucial to convert those chances and finish off games when the opportunity arises.

“We need to kill off games when we have the momentum and the chance to do so,” Kimani stated. “Our conversion rate needs to increase because we create so many chances that don’t find the back of the net.”

He emphasized that the team had enough opportunities to put the game out of Tusker’s reach, particularly during the first half, but their inability to do so allowed their opponents to mount a late comeback.

Praise for First-Half Dominance

Despite the disappointment of conceding the late equalizer, he had positive remarks about his team’s performance, especially in the first half. He commended the players for their control of the game, which saw them dominate possession and dictate the tempo for the majority of the match.

“We played well. We controlled the game, especially in the first half, and created enough chances that should have given us an unassailable lead,” Kimani said. He pointed out that had his team been more clinical in front of goal, the outcome would have been significantly different, making it difficult for Tusker to claw their way back into the match.

Defensive Concerns: Missed Opportunities to Protect the Lead

While the focus was on the team’s offensive struggles, Kimani also touched on Kenya Police’s defensive performance. When asked whether his team should have defended better to protect their lead, he acknowledged that the defense did its part for most of the game, but the lack of offensive conversion gave Tusker the belief that they could still secure a result.

“I feel that we have been costed by our inability to convert our chances, which gave Tusker the belief that they still had something in the game,” Kimani explained. The late equalizer underscored the need for improvement in both attacking and defensive aspects of their game, as failing to close out matches can prove costly in a competitive league.

Lessons Learned: Room for Improvement

The 1-1 draw against Tusker provided valuable lessons for Kimani and his squad as they look ahead to the rest of the season. The match highlighted both the strengths and weaknesses of the team, particularly their ability to dominate play but struggle to capitalize on key moments.

Kimani acknowledged that while the result was disappointing, it was important to take away the positives from the game. The control and creativity displayed in the first half are signs that the team has the potential to be a formidable force in the league, but they need to develop the mental fortitude to finish off matches when they’re in control.

“We are a work in progress, and I am confident that with time, we will get better at converting our chances and closing out games,” Kimani said.

Looking Ahead: Key Areas for Improvement

Moving forward, Kimani will undoubtedly focus on several key areas to ensure his team doesn’t repeat the same mistakes in upcoming matches:

  1. Finishing and Conversion: Improving the team’s finishing ability will be a top priority. Kimani’s emphasis on converting chances into goals will likely see a focus on goal-scoring drills and sharpening the forwards’ instincts in front of goal.
  2. Defensive Solidity: While the team showed defensive discipline for most of the match, the late equalizer suggests that there is room for improvement in maintaining concentration until the final whistle. Defensive drills aimed at preventing late goals could help the team become more resolute.
  3. Maintaining Momentum: Kenya Police will need to learn how to sustain their momentum throughout the entire match. While their first-half performance was impressive, the team struggled to maintain the same intensity in the second half. This consistency will be crucial in securing victories in the future.

A Promising Start with Room for Growth

Kenya Police’s 1-1 draw with Tusker FC in their opening match of the season may not have yielded the desired result, but it provided valuable insights into the team’s capabilities and areas that need improvement. Coach Antony Kimani’s call for a “killer instinct” highlights the importance of converting chances and finishing games strongly.

As the season progresses, fans can expect Kimani and his squad to focus on these key areas, with the aim of turning promising performances into consistent wins. If the team can address these concerns, Kenya Police FC may very well become a formidable force in the league this season.
